Pierce College cyclists help feed the hungry
Posted on July 1, 2010A team of dedicated Pierce College bike riders was undeterred by foul weather June 6 for the Fifth Annual Wheels to Meals fundraising bike ride for the St. Leo Food Connection, a local leader in the fight against hunger since 1982.
The Pierce College team raised $400, thanks in large part to donations from within the college community. The team consisted of Bill Orrange, Lori Griffin, Deb Ramirez, Kirsten Cope, Sarah Frye, and Chris Gibbs (Sarah’s significant other). Former Pierce College instructor Pete Simon also pitched in by volunteering at one of the aid stations along the bike route. The team members enjoyed a ton of snacks along the route and a post-ride celebration with food and live music.
“I think that I speak for everyone on the team in saying that this event was a great way to spend a Sunday morning,” said Frye, the organizer of the Pierce College team. “Being fairly new to Pierce College, it was certainly a great way for me to get to know some of my colleagues. I’m eager to participate in next year’s ride and hope that we can put together another Pierce College team!”
