Posted on June 24, 2010

TACOMA, Wash. – Yesterday, Thomas P. Rack, administrative law judge with the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings, informed Bates Technical College Interim President Lyle Quasim that the college administration had prevailed in its hearing regarding the impending reduction in force of five probationary and tenured faculty members.

Following the three-day hearing, Judge Rack determined that the college adhered to all statutory, case law and procedural requirements surrounding the questions presented, concluding that the identified faculty members were the proper ones to be dismissed.

Since 2008, Bates has undergone three rounds of layoffs and reduced its workforce by approximately 35 employees.

The layoffs, along with a reduction in goods and services expenses, are a part of a Board of Trustees-approved plan to cut approximately $2 million from Bates 2010-2011 operating budget. The board meets June 29 and will review the findings of the administrative law judge at that time.

Currently, Bates employs approximately 329 full-time employees, which includes 139 faculty members.
