Letter: Woodbrook's PTSA is now inactive
Posted on June 22, 2010By Karen Lebeter, Tillicum
The Woodbrook Middle School's PTSA is now inactive. We have not been able to meet the minimum member requirement to continue to be a part of the National PTA organization. The school used to have a PTO, but to start another we would have to file a 501(c)3 at a cost of over $700. Sarah Weiler and I have not had a child there for 2 years but tried to keep it going.
We awarded money we had earned through bookfairs and collecting Box Tops and Labels on Friday, June 18th. Beth Harrison is in charge of the student ASB and sports department. We gave her a check for $500 for a Scoreboard or other expenses for the Sports dept, and a check for $425 for the Student Body to be used as they wish (dance, party, supplies, etc.).
We awarded Maria Burdette a check for $100 for the Garden Club. There was no Garden Club this year due to lack of funds. I will be helping out in the fall with this project.
Mr. Arthur Friedley is an excellent teacher that instills a love of reading in his students. He has always promoted the book fairs and encouraged his students to collect Box Tops and Campbell Labels for the school. This past year, the only Box Tops and Labels I received were from his classroom. He always buys a lot of books for his classroom and we awarded his a check for $100 to buy more for next year.
We have enjoyed our time at Woodbrook and working with the students. I will continue to collect General Mills Box Tops and Campbell Labels for the school and volunteer when I can. Thanks for the memories.

How very sad and typical of what I have seen at our school this year. Very few step up to help and yet have a sense of entitlement as to what their child deserves. And then they blame the teachers when the school and kids are not thriving. Sad.

It is indeed a sad situation for our youth when parents and guardians do not have time to support them in learning and experiencing success in school. Surely, Woodbrook parents can do better.
