LAKEWOOD- Students from Harrison Preparatory School visited the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Camp Murray as part of their fourth annual Week Without Walls service learning project on June 2. The focus of the project was emergency preparedness and disaster management and the students learned what the role of EOC staff is during emergencies. The students have been learning about the different kinds of natural disasters they could encounter in the Northwest and how to prepare for them.

In addition, the students volunteered at the American Red Cross Mt. Rainier Chapter in Tacoma and helped refurbish the chapter’s emergency response vehicles. The students also filmed public service announcements and made presentations to share with students at Harrison Prep and elementary school students.

Week Without Walls is held every year at Harrison Prep and is designed for students to go into the local community to perform acts of community service. This year, various groups focused on alternative transportation, disaster management and preparedness, elementary mentoring, heart and soil, classroom makeover, new beginnings, restoring Puget Creek and soldier outreach. Students’ chose the group that was most interesting to them and staff led them in the curriculum and field trips.
