Comcast donates $1,000 to Lakewood Historical Society

Posted on June 3, 2010

Comcast has contributed $1,000 to the Lakewood Historical Society for a month's sponsorship, according to Gary Fowler, society treasurer. The sponsorship funds will help support the organization's activities, including exhibits at the Lakewood History Museum and the monthly programs.

The museum, located in the historic Lakewood Colonial Center at 6211 Mt. Tacoma Dr SW, has been open for four years and recently opened a new exhibit of typewriters. An on-going exhibit of cameras also remains in the museum, according to Becky Huber, president. Recently the museum received a microfilm library of The Lakewood Log and Suburban Times, going back to the initial issues of the Lakewood Log. A microfilm reader is also available for use in the museum. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4 pm. There is no charge for entry.

In addition to the museum, the funding from Comcast will help support the monthly public program the society sponsors. This month's program will take place at the Lakewood Library on June 15 starting at 7 pm. Joan Curtis, Steilacoom historian and author, will give a presentation on the more notorious inmates who were incarcerated at the McNeil Island prison while it was under federal control. The program is open to the public and free. Fowler said gifts such as the $1,000 from Comcast allow the society to continue producing the monthly, free programs.
