Wilder selected new U.P. Police Chief
Posted on June 2, 2010Pierce County Sheriff Lieutenant Rustin Wilder was selected Tuesday afternoon as the City of University Place's new Chief of Police. Scheduled to take office on July 2, 2010, Lieutenant Wilder will take over the post currently held by Jim Andrews, the City's Police Chief since 2005.
Selection of the new Police Chief was conducted under the direction of Sheriff Paul Pastor as a part of the contract the City has had with the Sheriff's Department since 1996. The interview team consisted of members from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office and the City of University Place. A group of four exceptionally qualified candidates, which included Lieutenants Cynthia Fajardo, Jim Kelly and Jerry Lawrence, were interviewed.
Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor expressed his support for Lieutenant Wilder’s selection. “I believe that Rusty Wilder will be an excellent Police Chief for this community,” he commented. “We greatly value our association with the City of University Place and Chief Wilder will move the Department even farther forward in the coming years.”
The University Place Mayor agrees. “We are delighted to welcome Lieutenant Rusty Wilder as the new Police Chief in University Place,” shared Debbie Klosowski. “Based upon Lieutenant Wilder’s experience, we are confident he will bring a collaborative approach and thoughtful perspective toward addressing community safety issues along with addressing the City’s current budgetary and staffing challenges.”
Lieutenant Wilder comes to University Place with extensive experience in the Sheriff’s Department, having worked as a Sergeant in Patrol and Detachment, a Detective in Robbery and Narcotics, as well as a Deputy in Patrol, Special Operations and School Resource. Since receiving his Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Master’s degree in business administration, both from the University of Washington, Lieutenant Wilder has continued his law enforcement education with courses in Integrated Emergency Management, Leadership and Executive Strategic Management. His awards for police service include the Medal of Merit, the Meritorious Service Award and the Medal of Team Valor.
