It's been three decades since Mt. St. Helens erupted, and while there's no immediate emergency on the horizon—as the Boy Scout Motto advises: "be prepared!" Being prepared was the task at hand for scouts from Troop 51 in Lakewood as they helped assemble emergency kits for Steilacoom High School.

The kit assembly project—an Eagle Scout project coordinated by Michael Bruno, a SHS junior, took place on May 22 at the Bruno residence. Assisted by fellow scouts from Troop 51, Bruno and his crew set up an assembly line in the Bruno family garage and carport, filling about two dozen backpacks with essentials such as flashlights, tarps, and duct tape to keep on hand in the event of an earthquake.

“Thanks to all those, from Steilacoom, Lakewood and DuPont, who contributed to the kit supplies,” said Michael. About 59 people provided items for the kits. The scouts also received about $700 in donations, earmarked for additional materials, he added.

The kits will be stored at SHS. Meanwhile—are you prepared?

Awesome job Michael! As a Lakewood CERT team member and understanding what will happen when a disaster strikes it is refreshing to see that not all Americans are appathetic to the fact that it is just a matter of time before something hits. Thank you for careing about your community!
