Idlewild’s Science Fantastic welcomes Lakes volunteers

For the past 11 years, Idlewild Elementary School (10806 Idlewild Rd. SW) has hosted an all day event called Science Fantastic! This year the event will be Friday, May 7 from 8:10 am-1:15 pm. Featured are 25 different science experiences from which our elementary students select an exploration of interest to them. They are free to move from station to station and explore hypothesis presented at a variety of levels by classroom teachers.
A successful Science Fantastic event requires many volunteers. This year, we are inviting 40 Lakes high school students to participate. They have been selected by Marilyn Bridgen, science teacher, on the basis of their ability to serve as enthusiastic role models for our young scientists. They may also use this fun and rewarding experience as an opportunity to earn community service credit toward graduation. This is an ideal opportunity for high school students who are entertaining the idea of pursuing a career in education or counseling, or who would benefit from an altruistic experience involving leadership, creative problem solving and the complex logistics involved in facilitating a unique science experience.
From the trajectory of various propellants, to the mysteries of surface tension on bubbles, this is an opportunity to share smiles, laughter and the excitement of discovery with a special mentor. An exciting day will be enjoyed by fledgling Falcons and Lakes Lancers.
