Domestic violence awareness: 26 seconds of silence

Posted on April 19, 2010

Pierce County residents are asked to pause for 26 seconds of silence at noon on April 26 to remember Crystal Judson and reflect upon the need to end domestic violence.

April 26 marks the seventh anniversary of the murder of Crystal Judson Brame by her estranged husband, Tacoma Police Chief David Brame. Staff from the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center are accepting proclamations from the Pierce County Council and the city councils in Tacoma, Fife, Lakewood, Puyallup, University Place, Edgewood, DuPont, Roy, Milton and Bonney Lake. The proclamation deems April 26 as Domestic Violence Awareness Day and asks citizens to pause for 26 seconds of silence.

"I urge everyone to take time on April 26 to reflect on the impact domestic violence has on our community, the many lives that have been lost, and make a personal commitment to doing your part to end domestic violence," said Susan Adams, director of the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center.

The Center provides comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence and their children. In 2009, more than 1,800 individual clients received services at the Center, ranging from safety planning and education to civil legal services, spiritual support, counseling, financial assistance and more.

For more information about how you can make a difference in the work to end domestic violence, visit the Center's web site at www.aplaceofhelp.org. The Center gratefully accepts donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries. Monetary donations to support the Center's Victim Services Fund can be made through the Family Justice Center Foundation Fund with the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.
