Letter: Maldonado family update

Posted on April 4, 2010

The following is an update on the Maldonado family from Mary Anderson who has been coordinating their needs.

Dearest Tillicum Community and friends,

Thank you so much for all of your donations of diapers and Similac as well as offering your time. I am sending you this long overdue email to update you concerning the Maldonado family - Parents Maria and Geraldo; and children Danny and Crystol (both in Middle School) and little Kaylee.

Last night (Thursday, April 1) I was privileged again to visit their home. With me, for the second time, came some friends - James, with his recently married wife, a kind-hearted girl relocating here from Mexico. She translated for us and truly enjoyed speaking Spanish. These evenings included much laughter and sharing of stories.

Maria related the doctor's early prognosis of no hope for Kaylee's vegetable state. With nothing more physicians could do, they predicted death within days saying, "She's in God's hands now." What a sweet place to be - for to her parents' credit Kaylee's continuous recovery is a miracle.

In part, this is why Maria no longer requests people to just hold her daughter so that mom can get some sleep. Last week, Maria related that Kaylee slept a bit better - about five hours per night. This week she said Kaylee slept seven hours on an average per evening, woke up for awhile, and then went back to sleep!

I know many of you have included Kaylee in your prayers so I wanted to update you with reasons for much joy. Especially with Easter around the corner, there is much blessing in the God who heals.

I've been thinking of ways for us to continue to support the Maldonado family. Here are some ideas, but feel free to come up with your own as you think about your own family needs.

  1. Formula - Similac - NeoSure Infant formula (yellow label).
  2. Diapers - size 3 or 4.
  3. Gas for their car or grocery store gift cards.
  4. Purchase the book I See Without My Eyes by Mark Hayward. One dollar of every book will go to Tillicum families in need. Currently those proceeds go to Kaylee's family. Many of you bought an autographed copy at the Tillicum/Woodbrook Neighborhood Association meeting on Thursday, April 1. You can reach Mark at mbhbooks@yahoo.com , 282-6978.

Thank you for your continued prayers. Kaylee's brain has shown signs of some regeneration but her sight is severely affected.

To drop off donated items please respond to this email.

I will keep in touch for further opportunities to serve - perhaps to include meals.

Thank you again for being such a caring community. Have a wonderful weekend.

Mary Anderson
