It started out 40 years ago as a wild game dinner with members of the Rotary Club of Lakewood preparing wild game they had caught during the previous year and getting together for an evening of fun, frivolity and some raffles and door prizes.

Over the years the event has morphed into one of Lakewood’s major community activities attracting more than 400 individuals for an evening that includes wild game, a silent and oral auction and resulting in a major fundraiser that has helped the 125-member club to raise and distribute approximately 2 million dollars to local community organizations, schools, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club and much, much more.

The 40th annual Lakewood Rotary Club Sportsman’s Dinner & Auction is slated for March 20 at the McGavick Center at Clover Park Technical College. The doors open at 5 pm.

Tony Robinson, chairman of the event, said the silent auction will feature approximately 500 items with a retail value of thousands of dollars. In addition, a number of special items will be available during the live auction. Fred Moisio, current president of Tacoma Rotary Club #8, will be the auctioneer.

The auction items – some live and some silent auctions - are as varied as progressive dinners for 8 people to an African camera safari, a Holland America Line 7-day cruise, a year’s garbage service and your own personal LeMay garbage truck (well, it’s a toy truck), condos in several locations like Hawaii, Mexico, Lake Chelan, fishing trip for two on Vancouver Island and dinner for 12 at Lakewold Gardens … plus many, many more items. Check out the updated list.

This annual fundraising event is open to the public. Tickets are $50 per person and are available from any member of Lakewood Rotary Club or by calling Rick Selden at 253-588-2104.
