Jones, Saunders to facilitate youth panel
Posted on March 7, 2010Assistant superintendent of public instruction Erin Jones and former Lakewood Police Chief Larry Saunders will facilitate a panel discussion of Clover Park School District students at Communities in Schools of Lakewood’s (CISL) annual Champions for Youth Breakfast on Wednesday, March 24. The breakfast begins at 7 a.m. at the Old Country Buffet in the Lakewood Towne Center.
Jones' passion is working with students in urban communities. She has received a Milken Award and served as the director for the Center for the Improvement of Student Learning, prior to becoming an assistant superintendent at OSPI. Currently, her work focuses on the achievement gap and dropout prevention throughout the state.
Col. Larry Saunders joined the Army in 1970 and served in a variety of significant roles before retiring in 1998. He returned to his hometown, Lakewood and served as the city’s first police chief. In 2008, he retired from that position and voluntarily returned to active military service, where he served as interim Director for the Iraqi Training and Advisory Mission. Currently, he serves as the chief of G3 Training for I Corps on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Larry is dedicated to helping young people become successful in life.
Youth panelists will be:
- Clover Park High School seniors Martha Texocotitla, Daniel Nego, Courtney Williams; and
- Lakes High School junior Nataly Scheidt.
The student panelists have unique stories to tell of their struggles and successes in life. Some are tutors in the CISL after-school programs.
In addition to the student panel discussion, CISL will recognize local “champions for youth,” and obtain continued support for its efforts to support Lakewood youth.
A minimum donation of $50 is respectfully requested. All funds support CISL After-School Programs, Readiness to Learn and Champions Mentor Programs, which provide assistance to Clover Park School District students and their families. Corporate sponsorships and tables are also available.
To make reservations or for more information, contact Christina Klas at the CISL office, (253) 589-7489.
