Little Church welcomes Rev. James Kim
Posted on March 2, 2010Submitted by Ken Upton, Elder
The Little Church on the Prairie recently welcomed Rev. James Kim as new pastor and Head of Staff. Since former pastor, Dr. Charles H. Carlson, who served the church for seventeen years, accepted a pastoral position in Champagne, Illinois, Little Church has been led by interim ministers Dr. Mark S. White and Pastor Cheryl McClanahan for the past four years.
Pastor James, a Seattle native, graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy from Pepperdine University and a M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary. He most recently served at Trinity Presbyterian Church in The Colony, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. An active participant with the Presbyterian Church USA, he also serves on national-level committees and is President-Elect of Presbyterians for Renewal.
The church's Pastor Nominating Committee, after an extensive search, enthusiastically recommended James to the congregation, finding his sermons “to be Biblical, fun, intelligent, easy to follow and scholarly all at the same time, a difficult combination that he seems to have a knack for carrying off.” His wife, Helen, and their four young children will join him here as soon as their home in Texas sells.
An iconic Lakewood landmark, Little Church on the Prairie was established in 1939 by business man and entrepreneur, Norton Clapp and his wife, by converting a grocery/hardware store located on the present site. Many changes have taken place on the church campus over the past seventy-one years including the addition of a Preschool and Child Care Learning Center.
Sunday services are held at 9:00 a.m. (traditional) and 11:00 a.m. (contemporary). More information is available on the LCOP web site at www.lcop.ws, or by calling the church office at (253) 588-6631 or 6310 Motor Ave. SW in Lakewood.
