Posted on February 22, 2010By Jennifer Callanan
Each month a staff member at Steilacoom High School is selected for the outstanding volunteer work they do for the school. For the month of February, Mr. Darrin Lowry was selected for the Staff Spotlight. Mr. Lowry is the Assistant Principal at Steilacoom High School and is appreciated for all the work he has done for students.
Mr. Lowry graduated from Bainbridge High School and went on to attend the University of Washington. He graduated from university with a bachelor degree in zoology and a minor in pre-med. Mr. Lowry has been teaching for 14 years starting at Hunt Middle School as a science teacher. He was also a principal at a school in Texas, and an assistant principal at both Orting and Auburn High Schools. Here at Steilacoom, Mr. Lowry is in charge of the Associated Student Body, attendance, discipline, evaluating teachers, and supervising students. In addition, he is also certified to teach instructional leadership and CTE.
There are many things Mr. Lowry enjoys here at Steilacoom High School. Prominent among these is influencing students and listening to excuses. Since he is the disciplinarian, Mr. Lowry hears all of the students’ excuses. He claims, “It’s kind of fun to do.” Why is Mr. Lowry a teacher/assistant principal? He likes to have an influence on students, and make the community a better place. There once was a time where Mr. Lowry made a difference in a student’s life. One day a student came into his office needing advice. The student had gotten his girlfriend pregnant and had a full ride athletic scholarship to a college. Mr. Lowry listened while the student talked out his plan to take care of the baby. Now the student is doing very well.
In his free time, Mr. Lowry enjoys water sports. He is also a volunteer for a local YMCA and coaches youth sports. Mr. Lowry also enjoys skiing, watching movies, and torturing teenagers. Mr. Lowry is from Canada, which is something most students do not know about him. A really interesting fact about Mr. Lowry is he has a 3rd nipple.
Mr. Lowry loves to be involved in many community activities here in Steilacoom. He likes to help out with his church activities. He also volunteers to supervise dances at Steilacoom High School and he volunteers for anything having to do with ASB. Students at Steilacoom High School really love having Mr. Lowry as the assistant principal. He is fun, kind, and keeps a great atmosphere for students and staff. Many students give Mr. Lowry the name “Low” and even have their own hand sign for him. Preston Danielson, a Steilacoom High School student, yelled out, “He’s boss!” when talking about Mr. Lowry. Drew Peters, another Steilacoom High School student, claims, “Mr. Lowry is amazing because he is from Canada and that’s where Preston and I’s Grandmas are from; so we are practically cousins!” Mr. Lowry has done a lot for students here at Steilacoom High School and everyone appreciates all of his work. Thank you Mr. Lowry for the wonderful things you do for us at Steilacoom High School!
