Lakewood City Council Candidate Forum
Posted by · October 1, 2009All seven candidates for Lakewood City Council attended a forum on Thursday night. Included in the two hour session was a flashcard Q&A. The candidates were each given three flash cards marked with Yes, No and Waffle. To answer the questions presented, they need only hold up the appropriate card. The candidates in the following photos are (from left) Mary Moss, Darrel Shiley, Mike Brandstetter, Connie Coleman-Lacadie, Sam Ross, Jason Whalen and Doug Richardson. Does Lakewood have a good image in our region?
Do you think the red light camera program in Lakewood should be increased?
In recent discussions between the city and Port of Tacoma, the idea of developing Woodbrook into a massive planned parcel – such as Dupont - was examined. Someone would have to buy it and displace 500 households. Would you support performing imminent domain to create this vision for Lakewood?
Would you support our school district having uniforms for students?
Should gaming be banned in Lakewood?
Do you support the 2nd amendment for the right of citizens to bear arms? Of note, Candidate Whalen realized afterwards that he selected the wrong card. He meant to choose Yes.
Do you believe that city staff is responsive to the needs of the citizens of Lakewood?
Do you believe that city staff is responsive to the needs of businesses in Lakewood?
Should the mayor be elected by the citizens?
Considering the huge impact of a military presence in our community, should there be a military ombudsman in the City?
In light of the spike in violent crimes and domestic violence in Lakewood, do we need more law enforcement?
Should our judges be elected by the citizens of Lakewood?

I found this article gave an overview of the issues in a creative manner. My thanks to the Times, and whomever came up with the “card” idea.
