Letter: Eagle Scout Project for Settlers Cemetery
Posted on April 13, 2009
Greetings! My name is Leavitt Castro, and I am a Life Scout with Troop 410 of the Boy Scouts of America. At this time I am working on my Eagle Project. My project is to tear down the existing fence around the Gravelly Lake Old Settlers Cemetery and build a new fence.
I am excited to be serving the community in which I have lived all my life, and want to make a difference in making Lakewood a beautiful place to live. I feel this cemetery, being on a main road, reflects to the people who drive by, just how we feel about those who settled this area and have passed on. I would like people to feel we have respect for those who have done so, but it is hard when the existing fence is such an eyesore.
An Eagle Project is a volunteer project, and I am aware this is a large undertaking, but I would truly like to make a difference in the community. Hopefully I have chosen something the people of Lakewood also would like to help see be improved.
The new fence, as approved by the Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department, will be a 4ft black vinyl coated chain link fence. There will be two walk in gates, a service gate and a drive in gate. The cost of this new fence will be approx. $20,000.00. Any extra funds raised will be used for the planting of daffodils along the fence line.
I am soliciting donations from the members of our community to help with the cost. All donations are tax deductable. I am also looking for any and all people who are interested in helping with the tear down of the old fence, and the cutting and removing of the brush/vegetation along the back fence line.
Any people who have professional experience in building chain link fences are welcome to come and offer their help and expertise with the project. All volunteers are welcome. Please feel free to call me for more information, volunteering or donations. My number is 253-581-3869.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Leavitt Castro

Leavitt, Thank you for your upcoming project! I was born and raised in Lake City, and have personal family friends buried in that cemetary. It has made me sad to see the fence so in disrepair. I hope you get lots of support, and can complete your project as planned. Leah

I helped a fellow scout with his Eagle Project at that cemetary around 1990-1991. It's nice to see it hasn't been forgotten. Keep up the good work!!

Congratulations on taking on such a big project! You are a person who has a vision for the future at the same time that you are able to embrace the remote past. Good for you! The entire community will benefit from your efforts for years and years to come.
With your work on the Old Settlers' Cemetery, and the work by other volunteers from the group Grave Concerns, who are transforming the desolate burial ground for patients from Western State Hospital, at Fort Steilacoom Park, this is a most remarkable week.
