Jacqueline Fae Sherk /Jones/ Groome

Jacqueline Fae Sherk /Jones/ Groome, a long time resident of Tacoma, lately of Atlanta Georga, passed away there on September 11, 2006. The third child of Ray and Verna Sherk I Atkins, born in Fargo, North Dakota, August 22, 1936. She was a beloved daughter, sister and mother, very caring of others. Always ready with a helping hand. A woman of many talents and interests. Boating, dancing, gardening and music to mention a few.

She will be dearly missed by so many others. Now dwelling in Paradise in her new body along side her beloved Lord, Jesus Christ. No more earthly pain. “Jackie” is now with her father, whom she doted on all her life, who preceded her in death in her young formidable teenage years. Survived by her husband Richard, sons Steve Haney, (Jane), and Mark Jones, (Terrye) of Atlanta, grandchildren, Fannece Crocker (Chris), Bridget Reiser, Todd and Megan Haney, Brandon, Eric and Jacob Jones, great-grandchild, Ashlyn Crocker, mother, Verna Atkins, sisters, Barbara Grant, Evon Wilson, and their spouses, brothers, Dale Sherk, Paul Sherk and spouse, Gary Sherk, and Keith Sherk, mostly from the Tacoma Area.

Visitation will be held from 1 – 9 PM on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Mountain View Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2006 in the Mountain View Garden Chapel.

Michael Garland Avey

Our loving husband and father passed away peacefully at home on Anderson Island on 9/16/06. Michael struggled thru difficult times the past three years battling leukemia and lymphoma. His strength and bravery were amazing, having made it thru two stem cell transplants and many rounds of chemotherapy, he never gave up hope and never complained. In the end, he had achieved a remission, but sadly, succumbed to complications of the donor transplant.

Michael was born in 1941 in Wenatchee, WA. The son of a fireman, James, “Jim” Avey and loving mother, Leona. He spent his early years fishing and hunting in Eastern Washington with his family, camping near rivers, and learning to fly racing pigeons. It was as young boy in the mountains, beside his father, that he first developed his passion for fly fishing, He served time in the Air Force in Germany and on Mt. Lemmon outside Tucson where he specialized in communications and radio relay. Michael developed a passion for history and archeology and went on to study at Arizona State, WSU for his undergraduate and graduate degrees, and the University of Washington for post graduate education. He was a much respected faculty member of the Anthropology Department at Pierce College where he taught Archeology and Cultural Anthropology for thirty years. He was the recipient of multiple professional awards, including the Faculty of the Year Award and the Students of Color Appreciation Award. He touched his students and colleagues in profound ways, both in and beyond the classroom, where his ability to respect others ideas and beliefs was not only theoretical; it was his way of life. Outside the classroom, Michael’s love of people and cultures extended to his work as an archeologist to the Washington State Highways Department, Washington State Historic Preservation Department, and the Steilacoom and Puyallup Native American Tribes. His love for humanity, social justice, and equality is his legacy for us all.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Dianne, and their young son Aidan; eldest son Shawn Avey (and family) of Phoenix; daughter Natalie Dorey (and family), mother Leona, sister Shirley Keller, brother Steve Avey all of Wenatchee.

The family would like to thank Franciscan Hospice and Dr. Brazina, Dr. Senecal and staff, Fred Hutchison Cancer Center, and the multitude of loving hearts and hands that have held us up thru this most difficult time of our lives. An informal gathering and celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, October 15, 2006 at the Anderson Island Community Club.

Winnie W. Raby

6-7-1917 to 9-16-2006

Winnie passed away peacefully in the early morning after a prolonged struggle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Robert Lee Raby. She is survived by daughters Mildred Ortiz (Bob) and Doris Renna, 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, 1 sister, 2 brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate her life will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday Sept. 23, 2006 in the Mountain View Garden Chapel.

Larry Barnes Jr.

Larry Barnes Jr. born November 28, 1978 in Tulsa, OK, passed away September 14, 2006 in Tacoma, WA.

Larry attended the Tacoma Public Schools and played football in high school. He loved fishing and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Mikalah, parents, Larry Barnes Sr. and Freda Spruill, sister, Sierra Barnes, grandparents, Harriet and William Caldwell, and Lillie Mae and Bruce Williams, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 11:00am Monday September 25, 2006 in the Mountain View Valley Chapel.

Paul C. Cramton

Paul was born in Youngstown, NY and passed away 9/15/2006 in University Place, WA where he lived for 30 years. Paul dedicated his life to the beer industry and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Beverly; brother, Ralph; 3 daughters, Tricia Seery, Sue Laybe, Kim Cramton; son, Bill Cramton; 2 step-children, Peggy Hardman and Robert Hardman; and 5 grandchildren. Paul will be forever missed by his family and friends.
