Fort Steilacoom presents historic lectures
Don't know much about local history? That can easily be remedied by attending one or all of the lectures scheduled in 2006 at Historic Fort Steilacoom. All lectuers,with one exception as noted, begin at 2 p.m. in Quarters 2 of the Fort. 9601 Steilacoom Blvd.S.W., (on the grounds of Western State Hospital) Phone 582-5838 for more information. All lectures are complimentary, but donations are accepted.

Joan Curtis, a Steilacoom historian, will talk about early pioneer, Nathaniel Orr, and the contributions he made to the Town of Steilacoom.

Indian War Miniature Gaming.
Lawrence Bateman, researcher of the 1855 Indian War sites, will reenact the conflicts, using miniature figures and terrain from 12 to 3:30 p.m.

Silas Casey, An American Warrior
Ken Morgan, Fort Steilacoom board member, will discuss the life of Silas Casey, commander of Fort Steilacoom and Civil War general. Included will be Casey's experiences on the
western frontier, wars in Flordia, Mexico and in the American Civil War.

Images of Lakewood.
Walter Neary and Steve Dunkelberger, co authors of the book Images of Lakewood, will speak about Lakewood history and researching and writing the book. Signed books will be available for purchase.

John Hemphill, retired Major General, will present a series of events in the Town of Steilacoom's long relationship to the Military. The military came to Fort Steilacoom in 1849 and left in 1868. The connection began again at the end of Nineteenth Century and continues to build into the Twenty first Century.
